Sparrow's Guide to Accessible Webmastery

Welcome to my little corner of the Internet!

We've gotten a lot better at web accessibility over the past couple decades. Sadly, the web lost a lot of creativity and humanity along the way.

The good news is that accessible websites don't have to be boring! There's a lot you can do without even changing the design of your webpage. I've written a "quick guide" to use as a starting point. I'm also writing some tutorials and compiling resources that I think are helpful. I'll be adding more over time!

Everything here comes from a combination of formal training and lived experience. If you wanna know more about why this site exists, you can read my philosophy.

I'm learning all of this as I go, and I'm sure I'll make mistakes. If you spot an accessibility problem on my website, please let me know!! I'll fix it as soon as I can.

Recent Updates

  • 2/15/2026: I have returned!! Added an animation section to the quick guide.
  • 2/3/2026: Added a links page, moved some stuff around (again), and re-did my navbar.
  • 1/30/2026: HUGE thank-you to strawberry-transneu! 🍓 found the original sources for a bunch of the stamps in my collection. I think it's important to credit artists when I can <3. I also moved some stuff around a bit
  • 1/29/2026: I did quite a lot of websurfing today (accidental hyperfocus, how I love and despise thee). Bunch of new links on my About page and in Resources!

  • 1/27/2026: Moved some of the fluff on my homepage to a separate philosophy page. I also wrote a bunch more stuff. Go look at it if you want to read my yapping.
  • 1/26/2026: I added a font family just for emoticons. Lexend (my main body font) has an angular 3 that commits crimes against :3, and that's just unacceptable. I also added some other stuff, but that's less important
  • 1/24/2026: Content update!!! I started writing a "Pause GIFs button" tutorial. It's a simplified version of the one that I'm using on my site. The code and "how to use it" sections are done, but I'm still working on explaining how it works. I'll probably finish that pretty quickly (no promises, though).
  • 1/22/2026: Made a header image! Again, it's probably not the final version, but I wanted to have something. I think it fits. I also added some stuff to my About Me page.
  • 1/18/2026: Made a favicon! Probably not the final version, but it'll work for now. I also added a background and made my button styling more "clicky".
  • 1/17/2026: Made my very own site button!! I'm no graphic design expert, but I feel like it looks good enough lol. Feel free to use it to link back here; I'd appreciate it! It's an SVG file, but it can be dropped into any webpage using a normal <img> tag. I like SVGs because they look sharp at any zoom level, which is helpful for people who use screen magnifiers. (It does kinda constrain your design a bit, though. You can do more complex stuff with a PNG or WebP.) I also switched monospace fonts and made a few changes.
  • 1/12/2026: Added a "play/pause GIFs" button. It's only on the "About Me" page for now, because... well... that's the only page with animated images. I expect that to change soon, though!
  • 1/9/2026: Launched the site!!! It looks a bit plain right now, but it won't for long. This is definitely "Version 1.0". Come back soon; I plan to post updates regularly!
